Summary

For some reason, i always used nerudas' name as a joke, for instance when somebody tries to be (THE THING THAT NERUDA TRIED TO BE BUT FAILED), id say hold on do you think that you are pablo Neruda。Tonight i was BORED TO DEATH, (and i also am avoiding the Martian) so i picked up different poetry collections, and my conclusion is: if its written by a man, RUN!!

“I Like for You to Be Still” and “Tonight I Can Write” were my favorites。 I feel poetry starting to affect me less as the heartbreak ebbs。 Good or bad? Who’s to say!

upon finishing this book, i realized that when i go to bed tonight i will wake up tomorrow knowing the inconsolable truth that i will never write anything as great as this。 the emotions, the raw sensuality, the absolutely devastating confessions in just a few words。 they moved me。 they shattered me。 i remember reading a pablo neruda poem in high school, it makes me wonder if i would have loved his work less if i had encountered it earlier。 i really am no lover of poetry, but this。 this right her upon finishing this book, i realized that when i go to bed tonight i will wake up tomorrow knowing the inconsolable truth that i will never write anything as great as this。 the emotions, the raw sensuality, the absolutely devastating confessions in just a few words。 they moved me。 they shattered me。 i remember reading a pablo neruda poem in high school, it makes me wonder if i would have loved his work less if i had encountered it earlier。 i really am no lover of poetry, but this。 this right here!!!! i can’t say i’ve felt so much from a piece of poetry before。 so many great lines, so many beautiful words weaved together。 i only wish that if i fall in love i want it to be so grand and beautiful as to inspire something equally pristine such as this。 reading this makes me fall in love with love, and even the pain it carries with it。 despite the title saying it was only 1 song of despair, i felt the melancholy in the love poems as well。 this was just so beautiful, my heart swells at the thought of this book and its contents。 the emotions i have for this book, i can write about it forever。 but for now i’ll keep it with me and i’ll try to forget what life was like before reading this。 。。。more

I read this collection since it was referenced in another book I was reading。 I appreciated the detail the translator went into in the introduction。 The additional context and analysis helped me to greater enjoy the poems themselves。

I will admit that I only read this because I wanted to see how good my spanish was after self-learning it。 I most definitely did not expect to find myself immediately looking for more poems from him and for Pablo Neruda to become one of my favorite poets💀

Pablo Neruda will always be the first poet that I fell in love with。 The poems in this book were so rich and so passionate。 I imagine this is what having wine must feel like, despite me not being one who enjoys alcohol; the more you let it sit, the deeper the taste, and the more it changes。 I'm usually not a poetry person; I've hardly ever read any poetry in my life。 But there's something about Pablo Neruda that calls to me。 He can turn me into a poetry person。 If you're searching for a special Pablo Neruda will always be the first poet that I fell in love with。 The poems in this book were so rich and so passionate。 I imagine this is what having wine must feel like, despite me not being one who enjoys alcohol; the more you let it sit, the deeper the taste, and the more it changes。 I'm usually not a poetry person; I've hardly ever read any poetry in my life。 But there's something about Pablo Neruda that calls to me。 He can turn me into a poetry person。 If you're searching for a special poetry book, this could be yours。 It's quite short, with only a few poems, but it does stand well as one of his most famous collections。 A solid five stars。 。。。more

Sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I wouldmaybe his poetry just isn't for me, maybe I'll appreciate them at a later time when I've gotten older, and hopefully wiser。 Sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I wouldmaybe his poetry just isn't for me, maybe I'll appreciate them at a later time when I've gotten older, and hopefully wiser。 。。。more

Neruda worships his lovers, women, in these verses。 It feels like he is helplessly infatuated with them, who he depicts as at once otherwordly, and nature personified。 He is intimately entwined with them, yet they always seem so far away and out of reach。 There is a lot of longing and sorrow in these twenty love poems, and not only in the Song of Despair。"So That You Will Hear Me" is one of the stars I've plucked from this collection ✨️ "So that you will hear me/ my words/ sometimes grow thin/ a Neruda worships his lovers, women, in these verses。 It feels like he is helplessly infatuated with them, who he depicts as at once otherwordly, and nature personified。 He is intimately entwined with them, yet they always seem so far away and out of reach。 There is a lot of longing and sorrow in these twenty love poems, and not only in the Song of Despair。"So That You Will Hear Me" is one of the stars I've plucked from this collection ✨️ "So that you will hear me/ my words/ sometimes grow thin/ as the tracks of the gulls on the beaches。Necklace, drunken bell/ for your hands smooth as grapes。And I watch my words from a long way off。/ They are more yours than mine。/ They climb on my old suffering like ivy。It climbs the same way on damp walls。/You are to blame for this cruel sport。/ They are fleeing from my dark lair。/ You fill everything。 You fill everything。Before you they peopled the solitude that you occupy,/ and they are more used to my sadness than you are。Now I want them to say what I want to say to you/ to make you hear as I want you to hear me。The wind of anguish still hauls on them as usual。/ Sometimes hurricanes of dreams still knock them over。/ You listen to other voices in my painful voice。Lament of old mouths, blood of old supplications。/ Love me, companion。 Don't forsake me。 Follow me。/ Follow me, companion, on this wave of anguish。But my words become stained with your love。/ You occupy everything, you occupy everything。I am making them into an endless necklace/ for your white hands, smooth as grapes。" 。。。more
